Internationalisation and investments in education as a driving force of development

Although the Silesian Aviation Cluster does not exist for a long time, it exhibits the hallmarks of a mature entity that has been dynamically developing in recent years. Currently the Cluster develops its business through international activities. While pursuing its goals, it still invests in young specialists.

The Cluster was established in 2006 as an organisation that represents the interests of 18 entities operating in aviation and science sector. The main objective was from the very beginning to enhance cooperation between enterprises, create optimal condition for knowledge transfer and innovative solutions. It should be emphasised that currently the Cluster members operate not only in aviation sector but also in other branches of science and industry. “Let’s work together to do it better, faster and more effectively” is a motto that guides the Cluster in everyday operations.

Nowadays the Cluster has nearly 60 members, including universities, business environment institutions and primarily entrepreneurs of aviation and automotive sector. The vision of the Silesian Aviation Cluster for the coming years is to create a strong structure having impact on the integration of the sector and further increase in sales, streamline the development processes and reduce financial constraints (including mitigation of risks resulting from technology transfer).

The Bronze Label of the European Cluster Excellence Initiative certificate attests to the high management standard and Cluster recognition in the international arena. This definitely makes it easier to promote and represent the interests of the organisation members throughout the world. Currently the Cluster started the audit process aimed at obtaining another certificate – the Gold Label which will allow it for entering the group of the best global clusters.

In October 2016, the Silesian Aviation Cluster was appointed as the Key National Cluster – the title awarded to clusters of significant importance for the national economy and high international competitiveness. It strengthened its position on the cluster map, successfully applying the competition under the Smart Growth Operational Program, Sub-measure 2.3.3. Internationalisation of Key National Clusters with a project ”International activation of the Silesian Aviation Cluster through promotional and business activities in connection with research and development and innovation activities of associated Cluster members”. The project was co-financed with the amount of PLN 3,828,620. The internationalisation project includes wide-ranging activities aimed at entering into foreign markets, for example by participating in international fairs, foreign missions or co-financing access to foreign research facilities.

One of the key development stages of each cluster is to promote its business on the international markets. Thus, the goal of the project implemented is promote the Cluster’s brand, increase its global recognition and primarily to strengthen the position of its members in relation to other entities operating in the aviation and automotive sector. This is a chance to find the right partners at the target market, introduce products or services into selected foreign market or broaden experience in commercialisation of innovative solutions in the field of aviation technologies that possible may be transferred to the automotive sector.

In its development process, the Silesian Aviation Cluster is aware that markets need specialists. Several years of cooperation with the Silesian University of Technology has resulted in two specialities under the patronage of the Cluster. These are second-cycle studies carried out only in English which makes them particularly attractive to foreign students.
